the clipboard community's best of 2021

the last issue of the year, thank god!

Welcome to clipboard, a weekly newsletter about clothes, hospo and Tāmaki Makaurau, by me, Reilly Hodson. This week, for the last issue of 2021, largely considered a bad year, we’re talking about the things you, the clipboard community, spent your money on this year. I’ll be taking a break after this issue for the holidays, and will return sometime in January.

best purchases

What a year, am I right? It’s truly been a *year like no other,* and in the consumerist system in which we all live, the best ways to cope and get through come from spending money. That’s why, every year, I ask you, the reader, to tell me about the best thing you spent money on this year, no matter what it was, and we got an awesome range of answers. Let’s crack into it.

“The best thing I spent money on was my $80 Organ from the Disabled Citizens society op shop on Dominion Road. I’m a sucker for anytime I see a keyboard in a shop window, this one teased me for a few weeks while they were shut during L3. Got in when they opened it, had a play and had to buy it. Got rid of my desk (I never do any work at my desk it just collects clutter) and it’s been great. 10/10.” - Leonard Powell, part-time professional lawnmower, full-time haver of excellent hair.

“So many good cops this year but one takes the cake by a lot. My new bike! This has been my dream bike since I started cycling so I’m over the moon about it. I’ll be upgrading it slowly over the next 6 months but it looks and rides better than I ever hoped.” - Jeremy Hooper, Photographer, designer, and best-looking lycra wearer I’ve ever met.

“A rolex.” - Cory Hodges, Sydney-based clipboard reader and man who clearly knows the power of a two-word answer

“Building a fashion platform for New Zealanders.” - Dody Al-Fayed, Founder of Chute, a forthcoming vintage and secondhand fashion marketplace.

“An online course from The Do Lectures! Highly recommend!” - Dominic Ellet, proprietor of Indigo and Provisions, my first stop when I can finally get to Christchurch.

“Gotta be the Aime Leon Dore x New Balance 550, has been the best everyday shoe.” - Chris Holdsworth, New Zealand’s best #OutfitGrid contributor.

“My education.” - @lostchildz_john, an Instagram account which tells you not to follow it.

“It’s a cliche at this point for people interested in fashion, but the best thing I spent my money on this year was my pair of Salomon XT-6s. They have been the perfect accompaniment to nearly half a year of working from home, supporting my regular little walks, and even my developing running habit. They look cool, and most importantly, they’re super comfy. Money well spent.” - Reilly Hodson, clipboard author and scroggin core enthusiast.

That’s all for clipboard for this week, and this year, thanks so much for reading! I’m looking forward to a restful summer break, and I hope you are too. Clipboard will be back in mid-January, until then, you can get in touch with me via email or Instagram.
