taking a sick day

an old-school, no images, all links issue of clipboard

Welcome to clipboard, a weekly newsletter about clothes, hospo and Tāmaki Makaurau, by Reilly Hodson. This week has been a shit one, so I’m taking the weekend off, sort of. If you enjoy clipboard, share it with your friends and consider chipping in financially by clicking the button below:

mental health day

This week has been a tough one for me. My work has continued to ramp up with no signs of slowing down, while lockdown also looks set to continue for a while, and I’m not even sure that I want to go to Level 2 yet, even though I desperately want to see friends and family again. In short, I’m exhausted, and I need a break. That’s why, this week, I’m spending the time I usually spend on clipboard reading my book, going for long walks and resting.

And so, instead of our usual programming, I thought I’d share some good things I’ve read to fill that Sunday morning void that the lack of a fun mini-essay about consumerism has undoubtedly created for you. Let’s get into it.

If you haven’t read Jean Teng and Kirsty Fong’s excellent reporting on poor employment practices at fine dining restaurant Pasture (I’m also outraged that they appear to have lied on their menu), do it right away. Then, subscribe to Metro to fund more of that good stuff and receive the best magazine being made in New Zealand, and read Jihee Junn’s well-argued piece about why it’s so shameful that Albert Cho of Eat Lit Food felt the need to slam the piece to his 67,000 odd followers.

I loved this article in the New Yorker, ‘On the Internet, We’re Always Famous,’ which provides a really good explanation as to why the internet has driven everyone so goddamn crazy all the time.

Today In Tabs is one of my favourite newsletters, I read it every morning. This week, it started a series with Heather Havrilesky of ‘Ask Polly’ fame, giving some good advice and some bad to readers with conundrums.

Dan Ahwa at Viva got the scoop from Jordan Gibson of Checks Downtown on the brand’s iconic collaboration with menswear podcast Throwing Fits, which you can preorder here if you’re quick.

And finally, a request for recommendations: where can one buy masks that both look good and cool but are also proven to be pretty good, scientifically speaking? I really want to up my mask game but I am also deathly afraid of catching or spreading the novel coronavirus, and so want the best possible protection. My DMs and emails are open.

That’s all for clipboard this week, thanks for reading, and thanks also for your patience while I take some time off to recuperate! I’ll be back with a regular issue next Sunday, see you then. In the meantime, follow along for to-the-minute update on Instagram, and get in touch with any questions, suggestions or offers of work.
