some videos to take your mind off *all this*
And one which is less escapist
Welcome to clipboard, a weekly newsletter about clothes, hospo and Tāmaki Makaurau by me, Reilly Hodson. This week: just some good videos after what has been a wild ride of a week.
youtube-only clips
I’m going to level with you: the past fortnight or so has been a ride for me. I’ve had all my wisdom teeth removed, gotten some of the remaining teeth filled a bit, done two job interviews, been offered a job, accepted said offer, started that job, finished the old job and in the middle of all that spent a fair amount of time worrying about the potential of another extended lockdown in Auckland. It’s all ended well, but suffice to say I have not quite had time to prepare the clipboard issue I had planned this week. My apologies. Next week’s issue is going to be a bumper breakdown of all the clothes I used to build my office wardrobe, so stay tuned. This week, though is going to be all clips, and just YouTube ones, mostly music related, the videos I’ve lent on while the world has shifted beneath my feet.
Haim released an extended edition of their latest album, ‘Women in Music Pt. III,’ with a version of ‘Gasoline’ featuring Taylor Swift and ‘3AM’ featuring Thundercat. Both new versions are very very good.
Imugi finally released a song I’ve seen them perform live a number of time, ‘Swimming,’ featuring fellow local act Hans., on streaming services.
Claire Saffitz of “Gourmet Makes” fame made a video about her favourite kitchen tools. I love to hear people talk passionately about offset spatulas.
Sometimes when I need a smile I just watch this TikTok of a girl crying and dancing to Mariah Carey’s classic tune “Obsessed.”
I find the YouTube channel Never Too Small, a show about repurposing existing small apartments and making them more functional, endlessly soothing.
People got mad about Phoebe Bridgers smashing her guitar on SNL in this performance but I personally thought it was pretty cool.
Whenever I feel bad, I just watch Tyler, The Creator’s Tiny Desk Concert and I feel a little more centred.
The next thing I’m going to watch is the latest instalment in RNZ’s New Zealand Wars series, ‘Stories of Tainui.’ Obviously not particularly uplifting stuff, but important for all of us to see, especially the ones who, like me, sort of scoffed at the idea of learning Aotearoa history at school.
