a pre new years resolution suggestion
Welcome to clipboard, a weekly newsletter about hospitality, clothes and Tāmaki Makaurau, by Reilly Hodson. You can follow me on Twitter and Instagram, and send me an email with questions, suggestions or offers of work. This week: suggestions for an end of year Instagram feed refresh.
follow some new people
We’ve all been spending too much time on Instagram this year, and if your experience is anything like mine, it’s starting to get a bit stale. My suggestion is not to cut back on your screen time, though I’m sure that’s useful too, but to go in on a refresh of the accounts you follow. Mute and unfollow accounts you’re fed up with seeing too much of (especially stories, mute people’s stories!), and follow some new ones. Here are a couple of my favourite accounts for clothes, food and Tāmaki stuff.
Rubbish Bin: Mitchell Tan’s vintage and second hand clothing selling page might just be the best of its kind in the 09. Mitchell doesn’t mess around with old All Blacks jerseys or Polo caps, it’s all bangers, including some proper high fashion grails, all at very reasonable prices. He’s extremely knowledgeable about the product he brings in, and he’s a day one clipboard supporter. I got my new favourite pair of pants from Rubbish Bin, and often find myself very gutted when he has a great piece that isn’t my size.
@imspinningplates: In her day job, Natalie Guest is in charge of the Auckland operation for Coffee Supreme, but when she’s at home she is true home cooking goals. Natalie cooks great meals all the time, along with regular cocktail hours. Because she lives a real life with real commitments like a job and a daughter, Natalie’s cooking is excellent inspo for your own home cooking in ways that don’t feel out of reach, though I will never be able to amass as good a collection of glassware as hers.
@tiniestyo: I first followed Ashleigh, whose last name I regrettably do not know, when they were working in the kitchen at my favourite cafe that ever existed, Ceremony. Fast forward a few years and they’re now one of the busier people in the hospo business, responsible for Bestie’s excellent cabinet fare, cakes at The Caker, and pulling shifts at Bao food truck Bun Hun. Ashleigh is an excellent Instagram follow because they live in an extremely photogenic flat and they make, eat and post a ton of delicious looking food.
@fleecegibson: Jordan Gibson, the man behind popping local streetwear brand Checks Downtown, is pretty mild mannered in conversation, but on his Instagram he drops only very excellent fit pics, generally wearing his own clothes, and true to Checks’ “no black” policy, the looks are often much louder than I usually go out in, but it’s good inspo nonetheless. Jordan is also a low key food connoisseur, with some good tips for places to eat out.
@clipboard.nz: This is just shameless self promo. I am very bad at Instagram, but have made an account for this newsletter for a laugh. I have no idea what to do with the grid yet so it is very bare, but if you follow you get access to the stories, which feature my outfits, places I’m eating and drinking at, and reposts of important goings on around town. A worthwhile follow that won’t clog your feed, hopefully! I’m always open to suggestions as to what to do with the thing, too, so get in touch if you have any ideas.

THE must read story of the week is this brilliant investigation by Ensemble’s Zoe Walker-Ahwa and David Farrier into the unravelling of the people behind famed local brand Lonely Lingerie into wild conspiracy theories, COVID denialism and more. It’s a long read but every word is absolutely worth it!
Fashion and small goods pop up Iffy is has opened on Ponsonby Road, featuring cool local pieces from designers like clipboard fave Havilah Label and Leo Leo, a great shout to treat yourself to some new garms or tick off some Christmas shopping, they’re there until the 28th of December.
New local menswear brand Thom Morrison has opened their store on Great North Road in the Grey Lynn shops, next to Wise Boys. Locally made, considered clothes for guys is a big yes from me! My favourite pieces of their first collection are these jeans, this shirt and this jacket, which isn’t online yet but you can find in store.
Stuff’s massive piece of work diving into their history of racist and biased portrayals of Māori and Māori issues was an amazing first step for our biggest news organisation, and this interview with the Spinoff goes into depth about how it all happened.
An excellent read about why you should still be wearing “hard clothes.”
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki opened its biggest ever exhibition on Friday, a full-gallery survey show of contemporary Māori art called Toi Tū Toi Ora. It’s a mammoth achievement, and quite amazing to see in person. Set aside a full day to go and finish off with a wander down to see the accompanying works at Britomart, and while you’re there try Michael Meredith’s new restaurant, Mr Morris, which looks brilliant.
Still on Māori art, the new edition of Ate Journal of Māori art is available now at Objectspace in Ponsonby and online.
There’s another wine bar on Karangahape Road, called Candela, specialising in Spanish flavours and wines with local produce. It’s got much larger dining room than the competition on the street which will hopefully provide for some great ambience. Opening night is this Wednesday.
You can now sign up to Jean Teng’s excellent Metro Eats food newsletter on the Metro site, it’s a must read every week.

You can still find the clipboard locals only gift guide to tick off your increasingly pressing present buying list, I’ll be finishing my holiday shopping this year, exclusively off the gift guide.
I’m taking commissions and contracts, as well as looking for full time work, for the new year! If you need copy written, articles reported, or are otherwise looking to employ someone with both a Communications and an Honours Law degree (or know someone who is), get in touch! I would love to no longer be employed in the hospitality industry, or to earn a living wage, or both!
If you enjoy clipboard, there is no better gift you could give me this holiday season than sharing it with a friend who you think would like it. It’s one of my favourite things to do every week and I would love it to grow into something that lots of people enjoy as much as I’m sure you do.
That’s all for this week’s clipboard, see you next week!
