september clips

happy daylight savings!

Kia ora, and welcome to clipboard, an occasional email newsletter by me, Reilly Hodson. Isn't it fantastic to be in daylight savings time! This weekend, a roundup of the best stuff from the last month or so.

Reilly in a full Checks fit, for a work from home day? groundbreaking

Spring is sprung! At least, for those of us lucky enough to be avoiding the deluge down south, which is bringing back unpleasant memories of January 2023. Climate change is real, folks. Daylight savings springing forward is one of my favourite times of the year - there's nothing like coming home from work and feeling like the day is still young, the sun is out and the world is your oyster.

This month's clips are a reflection of those improved vibes, and emphasising the magic of supporting the world you want to exist as an antidote to the bad vibes of everything else.

Let's get into it.

🎲 We all know I love a daily game, and my latest obsession is Alphaguess, a game where you guess words based on their position in the alphabet. So far I'm averaging about 16 guesses, but who knows whether that is good or not.

🗒️ Every newsletter writer aspires to the insight and depth of thought of Jonah Weiner and Erin Wylie of Blackbird Spyplane. One of their latest, a dos and don'ts list for a "Mach 3" lifestyle, distils what makes it such a good read, balancing the joy of cool stuff with a deep sense of caring for the planet and other humans. Nowhere else would you find "don't wear heather grey tees in public" alongside "if you're in a rush, pause and think about it - are you really?"

👓 Get your eyes checked! Becoming an adult is filled with random life admin that is easy to forget about, and this month I got my eyes checked for the first time in over three years. Turns out the headaches I've been getting at work weren't just from the weird lighting, I needed glasses! As a bonus, I've now got a new accessory to use in place of forming a real personality.

🍻 🍽️ The phrase "cost of living crisis" has long since passed into cliche, but we can all feel the truth of leaving the house and suddenly noticing your bank account shrinking more than expected. In order to balance the need to be fiscally prudent with the fact that one of my only hobbies is dining out, my wife and I have been adopting a new approach to going out - "two drinks, three little plates." It's like microdosing a full meal out, and involves going to a little bar, ordering a couple of drinks and some small plates, before going home early and having a real meal. It feels very luxe and cosmopolitan, and has allowed us to have three lovely evenings out this month for the price of one big dinner.

📚 There's a new Sally Rooney book out, which apparently means that everyone on the internet has to completely lose their mind and blow one person's work way out of proportion. I get it, it's natural to overanalyse work that has somehow achieved outsize importance and popularity, but let's all touch grass and accept work on its own merits. Hera Lindsay Bird unsurprisingly has the best take I've seen on the whole schamozzle.

🧥 Italian sportswear is one menswear vibe I've never really tried out, but Throwing Fits x CP Company has me wondering if I should take out a personal loan and become an insufferable guy who only wears insane technical fabrics and over engineered knitwear. New vibe incoming?

☕ I already own too many ceramics for my two person household, but if I was to start my whole collection again, I would get a full set of this new collection from Maruhiro, available at Everyday Needs. I'm particularly into the brown and navy, which would be an awesome combo to 50:50 your home collection.

That's all for clipboard this time, thanks for reading! If you like clipboard, forward it to your friend who is always up to date with their dental checks. I'll be back in your inbox at the end of the month for a monthly roundup of good stuff. If you want to get in touch, you can reply to this email, or hit me up on Instagram, I'd love to hear from you.
