not a gift guide (yet)
Kia ora, and welcome to clipboard, an occasional email newsletter by me, Reilly Hodson. Sorry for the brief hiatus, has been quite a major few months for me. This weekend, a roundup of the best stuff from the last month or so.

need to up my design game, I know
Hello again! Since we last caught up, I’ve resigned from my job (3 weeks to go!), bought tickets to move to London, had the first of a few clear out sales in advance of the aforementioned move, and (unrelated) managed a photoshoot with Colin Mathura-Jeffree, one of Aotearoa’s most interesting people.
More to come on our move in the next few months, but suffice to say that there are likely to be a few changes coming to this newsletter as I spend two months lounging in the sun and then moving to the country of most of my ancestors. As we get into the new year, I’ll be charting the process of uprooting my life in more frequent dispatches, preparing for what will likely be a total relaunch of clipboard when we land.
Before then, I’d love to hear from you, the genius, kind, cool reader of this boutique newsletter brand. What would you like to read about over the summer? Will you stick around even when my wine bar recommendations aren’t nearby? Hit reply to this email, or drop into my DMs - I’d love to chat virtually or in person. And if you have connections in the UK for a place to live that won’t charge me 6 months rent in advance, work in the creative, media or corporate communications worlds, or just a cool person to grab a pint with, let me know - I’d be forever grateful.
Now, here’s some cool stuff from the last month(ish!)
📹 The biggest and most impactful moment of the last month (perhaps the year?) in Aotearoa was te Hīkoi mō te Tiriti. It was so energising to see tens of thousands of people joining together in support of a common cause, and embracing what makes Aotearoa unique. If like me you weren’t able to be there in person, my sister-in-law Ella Stewart worked on a short documentary for RNZ which followed the Hīkoi down the motu and spoke to the people involved. A much watch, especially if you’re prone to moments of despair in this political climate. Watch it, then draft your submission on the Treaty Principles Bill, and then keep paying attention even after it fails at Select Committee.
🌐 Checks Downtown is no longer in town! Checks has taken up residence in Newmarket, next to the somehow-still-kicking I Love Ugly store on Osborne Street. In line with the new store, they’ve also dropped a new range that includes some of my favourite pieces they’ve ever made. I love this chunky crew neck cardigan, these native tree camo pants, and the merch hoodie for the new space might need to come overseas with me as a memento. There are some great in store exclusive pieces, too.
🗞️ This has been a harrowing year for the New Zealand media, with a succession of incredibly worrying updates at every major news organisation. Not to belabour the point, but we all rely on journalists and the media to understand what is really going on. The latest SOS is from The Spinoff, perhaps the publication I engage most with on a daily basis. If you can afford to, sign up for a membership, and if you have friends and whānau who love independent media, maybe buy some as gifts this holiday season.
👕 New Zealand’s best menswear brand, Thom Morison, has shifted to a new, more regular release model from its previous seasonal releases. I can’t say that I always understand what the letters and numbers refer to, but what I can say is that the shorts, shirts and tees since the new model came into place are all excellent, and break through the challenge of how to dress in the summer.
🧹 ⚔️ Movie corner: after a long hiatus from the cinema, I went to both Wicked and Gladiator 2 in the last couple of weeks. I enjoyed both movies a lot: neither are doing anything particularly groundbreaking, but sometimes all you need is a fun time and spectacle.
🧢 I love a novelty slogan cap - one of my most worn accessories is a black cap that says “Engineering Matters” that my family made for my grandad’s birthday. A new one on my watch list is this “Out of Office” number from Coffee Supreme. Perfect for my upcoming funemployment.
🗓️ Save the date: if you want to pick up a piece of my highly curated, top quality selection of clothing and homewares, my wife and I will be setting up at the Central Flea market on 22 December, with plenty of bits priced to move as we continue to clear out before our move. Hope to see you there!
That's all for clipboard this time, thanks for reading! If you like clipboard, forward it to your friend who already moved to London. I'll be back in your inbox soon with a gift guide, if I can find the time to write it in time. If you want to get in touch, you can reply to this email, or hit me up on Instagram, I'd love to hear from you.
