Lockdown, this time around, has been very bad, mostly. Working feels harder and being confined to my one bedroom flat with my lovely partner is not easy, when my mental health is finely balanced on the ability to hang out with people (strike one) at shops (strike two) and hospitality establishments (strike three, out).

There have been two silver linings, though. The first is that clipboard has experienced very impressive growth, with a bunch of new folks joining the club (welcome, all!), and the second is that I can wear whatever I want to work.

With both of those in mind, I thought that I would share some fun facts about myself, alongside some cool outfits I cooked up after shopping my wardrobe, a practice I heartily endorse.

With any luck, you’ll come out of this knowing a bit more about me, and get an idea of my clothing philosophy: you could hit the random button on all of the pieces in these looks and they would match up pretty well.

I’ve been in a relationship for 7 years, with Liv, who I met while playing the lead in a high school production of a Disney musical.

I have a law degree, and because I wrote my honours dissertation on a subject which is not often studied, I have a dubious claim to being one of the country’s foremost scholars on defamation law.

I broke my left leg twice as a child, and now my left foot doesn’t quite line up right with the direction of my knee.

I worked in hospitality for 6 years, including bartending, barista-ing, waiting tables, and scooping ice cream, which is why I’m such a snob about good service, wine and coffee.

I am a former national champion barbershop singer.

• Chris Schulz at The Spinoff interviewed award winning barista Sam Low about lockdown coffee, in a must read piece. I did the first two weeks of lockdown without any coffee at all, and I 100% agree that you have got to lose the milk. Do not try to make a perfect flat white unless you are keen to waste a bunch of milk learning how to make it happen.

• Related: if anyone has a rec for a good coffee grinder, let me know because I’m on pre-ground at the moment, which goes against every bone in my coffee snob body.

• The new Metro Magazine is out, and it might be their best yet. Find the best top 50 restaurant list since I’ve been reading it every year, and a truly excellent piece of journalism from clipboard day 1 Jean Teng, about the (allegedly) terrible labour practices at fine dining restaurant Pasture. Buy it in print on your next supermarket trip, or subscribe, it’ll be the best $59.80 you spend all year.

• A very nice Universal Works drop has just arrived at Indigo and Provisions in Christchurch. I like this pair of black pants and this shirt very much.
