good stuff from the end of the Māori year
Kia ora koutou, and welcome to clipboard, an occasional newsletter for cool people by me, Reilly Hodson. Mānawatia a Matariki! This New Year's edition has recommendations from the last month, for the second month in a row, which is a positive development.

had to do it
Happy new year everyone! I love having a long weekend to reflect in the middle of winter, particularly after what has been a hearty dose of seasonal affective disorder these last few months. My wife and I went down to the Ngāti Whātua Matariki celebrations on Friday morning and I was struck by the aroha and care that goes into hosting an occasion like that. If you've never been to something like that, one to put in the diary for next year.
Now, links!
🕴️Derek Guy is the smartest writer about men's fashion that I've found, and I'll always read anything he writes. This piece, about the confounding reasons why men are afraid of being seen as "into fashion." A point of view that is perhaps shifting in the age of the TikTok fit check, but incredibly well explained regardless.
🟩 You don't need me to tell you to listen to the Lorde remix of "girl, so confusing," but I'm going to, anyway. It's the perfect time to revisit Pure Heroine, Melodrama and Solar Power, too.
🎞️ I'm loathe to call myself a cinephile, but I do like to watch movies, as well as play silly little daily games on my morning commute. Vulture's Cinematrix sits perfectly at the intersection of those interests. A fun game to add to your Wordle, Connections, Crossword rotation!
🔫 Speaking of movies, Hit Man on Netflix is a really fun way to kill some time. A good, enjoyable movie with charismatic movie stars that plays on familiar tropes and isn't too long? Perfect for a Saturday night in, imo.
🌐 If you missed Checks Downtown's in person archive sale, it's now shifted online! A few personal favourites: these Canterbury of NZ collab track pants, a classic denim shirt, a weather-appropriate sky blue fleece vest , and the casual suit that I'm reliably informed heralds Checks' return to tailored garms (jacket and pants).
🎧 It's not ideal to recommend a podcast just as it's going into a between-season hiatus, sure, but I'd like to shout out to Search Engine, my favourite podcast at the moment and one of only a few that I'd consider paying the subscription fee to support. The upside of the end of season is that there's heaps of episodes to catch up on - my favourites are "Is there a sane way to use the internet" (which convinced me to delete Twitter, and later, TikTok), "How do you make an addictive video game" (which re-enabled my Marvel Snap addiction), and "What does it feel like to believe in God?"
👔 If you've been looking for more of the straight shopping recommendations that I used to trade a bit more heavily in on this newsletter, I can heartily recommend Magasin's new regular menswear column from Louis Cheslaw (here's the most recent one). Louis has taste that aligns very closely to my own - abreast of trends and capital-f-fashion, but focused on comfort, wearability and leaning towards classic styles. Magasin's regular programming is also great for more feminine style.
📵 If, like me, you're looking to reset your relationship with your phone, I have been interestedly looking at this E Ink phone called the Boox Palma. It can run any app you'd like, but really it's only good for reading text or playing audio, so perfect for putting your TikTok machine away and finally reading those longform articles or email newsletters you've been putting off. This piece in the Verge perfectly sums up the appeal.
That’s all for this issue of clipboard, thanks for reading! If you enjoyed this issue, forward it along to your friend who’s about to be insufferable about their trip to Europe for the next few months. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks probably, and if you want to get in touch in the meantime with feedback, offers of work or birthday wishes (3 July 😉), then you can hit reply on this email, or reach out via Instagram.
