issue #1

an introduction, and all the links you should click this sunday

Hi There! I’m Reilly and this is clipboard. I’m a student, freelance writer and barista in Auckland, and started this thing as a way to talk about the stuff I like: delicious food and drinks, clothes that fit and look good, and culture to spend your free time with. The fundamental idea of this newsletter is that you can find world-class versions of all of that stuff right here, in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Every issue, I’ll go deep on one thing that’s grabbed my attention that week. It could be a restaurant I’ve been to, some clothes I’ve bought, or just something I’ve been thinking about a lot. It will be descriptive but not too long (a perfect pairing with a coffee and a pastry, or a Sunday morning headache, I don’t judge), and will always be positive, because I’m not very good at explaining why I don’t like things, and who cares anyway.

Under that, there’ll be clips, which are links to things which are cool, whether that be a great celebrity profile, a YouTube documentary or an upcoming event (feel free to send me things you’d like to see included in clips, I’m only one guy, after all). There’ll also be some music recommendations, and there’s an accompanying playlist (it’s on Apple, sorry, Spotify people, hit me up for the tracklist) which is just music that I’ve been listening to recently. If you like local music, mid-2000s radio pop and sad white people with guitars, this is the playlist for you.

I’m also going to periodically remind all of you that this is an election year, and you should vote in it! It’s one way that you can make a real difference in the way the country is run, and it’s important to pay attention to what’s going on in our backyard as well as the admittedly-much-more-bad stuff happening overseas. If you posted a black square on Instagram but aren’t clued into the systems (many of which were founded on racist thinking) which govern this country, and aren’t interested in voting to change them, you should work on that.

I look forward to hearing from you, too! You can follow me on instagram at @reallyreillyh, and you can email me [email protected]. Let me know what you want to hear about in these newsletters, ask questions, and send me cool stuff on your radar. Regular programming starts next week, let’s get into some links.

clips

  • May Fair is an online art fair filled with emerging and unrepresented artists from NZ and the Pacific. The first four virtual stalls opened on Thursday, with new ones coming every week. Francis McWhannel did a good write up about the featured artists for Index.

  • Restaurant month started yesterday. My picks of the bunch are Gochu, Depot and Ima, but frankly, you shouldn’t need a discount or deal to eat good food, so support restaurants and eating establishments which aren’t involved, too, especially smaller ones (get in touch if you’d like a list of my favourites).

  • Toby Morris at The Spinoff reviewed every political party’s hoarding designs.

  • I have been listening to the new Taylor Swift album folklore quite a lot since it dropped last Friday, and these reviews from the New York Times and Vulture do a really good job of explaining why it’s so intriguing, if imperfect.

  • Good sales are happening at Good As Gold, Commoners (I just bought this jacket, and recommend it, but definitely size down) and Kowtow (who only style their stuff on women, though I can personally attest to their knits and pants being good for people of any gender expression - go in store and try some on).

  • The Ringer’s NBA Desktop video series is the best companion to the now-restarted NBA season.

  • eighthirty’s cafe on Karangahape Road is now called OPEN, and although I don’t love eighthirty’s coffee personally, it is very cool that they had a Lisa Reihana show to celebrate the rebrand.

  • Mad Chapman at The Spinoff is doing a weekly meme column about the election and it’s funny and digestible even if you’re only barely interested in politics.

  • If you’re interested in going deep on politics for the election season, I recommend subscribing to RNZ’s Caucus, as well as The Spinoff’s Gone By Lunchtime. Find them both wherever you find your podcasts.

  • This ‘Diary of a Song’ about Phoebe Bridgers’ excellent ‘Kyoto’ is worth a watch, that series is always brilliant.

  • Brannavan Gnanalingam got very open about a traumatic experience he was a part of in high school, and the very-all-boys-high-school way he responded to it. He also has a new book out on this topic which I can’t wait to read, as a former prestigious boys’ school student myself.

  • Don’t be a mana muncher.

  • Dickies 874s are back in stock in black here (in a 30” waist, anyway). They’re $70 and the best pants I own, no need overthink it. If they don’t have them in your size online and you’re in the market, the Sale Centre in Otahuhu and Dickies Outlet in Onehunga Dress Mart have good (if inconsistent) in-person offerings.

  • The hottest meal on my Instagram stories in the past week was the Baby G Burger pop up at the Henderson Farmers market. They were also at the Checks Downtown new store opening the other week, keep an eye out.

sounds

  • I haven’t listened to the Naked and Famous since they were on mainstream radio in 2010, but their new album is a pleasant surprise! I particularly enjoy the song ‘Everybody Knows.’ (Apple Spotify YouTube)

  • The new Haim album is one of my favourites of the year, and this live concert they gave in Canter’s Deli in LA is very good too.

  • There’s a new Beyoncé visual album on Disney+, but you already knew that (it’s called Black is King).

  • Church & AP, NZ’s best rap duo, are features (separately) on two very good new released. Catch AP on Diggy Dupe’s ‘That’s Team’ (Apple Spotify YouTube) and Church on Vayne’s ‘Make It.’ (Apple Spotify YouTube)

  • Paige has a new EP called ‘Always Growing.’ I love the slick, lush chords on ‘Make Room,’ co-written and produced by Josh Naley aka WELLS*. (Apple Spotify YouTube)

  • ‘Bodies’ by The Knocks & MUNA is a classic summer banger. (Apple Spotify YouTube)

  • Benee did an at home acoustic performance for the Fader that is every bit as fun as you’d expect.

  • Taylor Swift’s new album is worth a listen the whole way through, but if you only have time for three songs, I recommend ‘betty,’ (the most Taylor-Swift-y song on the record) ‘the last great american dynasty’ and ‘exile (feat. Bon Iver).’ (Apple Spotify YouTube)

  • Gen Z’s favourite pretty boy with face tattoos Dominic Fike put out an album, it’s called What Could Possibly Go Wrong. (Apple Spotify YouTube)
