autumn wish list

what I'm shopping for as the weather dips a bit

Welcome to clipboard, a weekly newsletter about good shit in Tāmaki Makaurau, by Reilly Hodson. This week, I’m sharing my wishlist for autumn, and what I’m looking to pick up as the weather gets cooler. If you enjoy clipboard, share it with your cool mates, and chip in with some money at the link below.

christian boy autumn

This week, it felt like there were a couple of days that could be described as “transitional” weather, which in the post-climate-change era in Auckland means about any weather where you could get away with long sleeves, or even (*gasp*) a jumper. This will only be my second autumn/winter as a grownup with a real job, so I am still in the process of building out a professional wardrobe, so I thought it would be worth sharing the pieces that are on my list. If you have suggestions for any of these categories, flick me a DM on Instagram, or an email.

black, navy or grey trousers

I started my life as a salaryman wearing Dickies to the office, but because I cycle between two pairs for every day at work, they’re starting to wear through. I’m looking to replace them now, either with another few pairs of Dickies (which I’ll get hemmed), or with something a bit more upmarket. I’m going to take a look at these wider, heavy guys from Norse Projects, the Military chinos from Universal Works, and I’m open to any suggestions!

work appropriate shoes

At the moment, my office shoe rotation is three black leather shoes (penny loafers, Blundstone boots, and Dr Martens 1461 Monos) and my white Reebok Club Cs. They’re all very good shoes, but it’s quite a limited selection, and one I’d like to build out a bit more, potentially with an option in a brown, or a different fabric. I’d love some suede loafers like these from Drake’s, Clark’s Wallabees, or some chonky Paraboots, which I’ve been lusting for after seeing them everywhere in Europe in 2019.

mid-weight outerwear

Auckland weather almost never requires a real heavy coat. Almost all of the time, you can get away with a cotton jacket of some kind. My heavy outerwear needs are covered by a Patagonia Retro X fleece and a big woollen overcoat, but I’m keen to add one more to my light and mid-weight outerwear rotation. Inspo includes this barn coat from Checks (although I’m not sure I can pull off the purple) and all the barbours they wear in the Crown and Spencer, and I still haven’t found the perfect option.

knits

When you don’t need a jacket, I like to just throw on a light knit over my shirt at work, or over a t shirt to look a bit more fancy. I have quite specific needs in knitwear, because my skin hates most wool, so I can only wear super fine merino or cotton knits. I’ve got my eye out for options in blues, greens and greys, and will keep you all posted.

a bike

I put out a brief call for bike recommendations last week because there was a potential that my partner and I would move into an apartment with no carpark, and got very few recommendations. I am now renewing that call, because I signed that lease, and expanding my search into regular, push bikes from e-bikes. I know there are bike nerds reading this, and I need recommendations for bikes, bike shops, and any other gear I need to ride a ~30 min commute into town. You know where to find me!

clips

That’s all for clipboard this week, thanks for reading! I’d love to know what’s on your autumn wish list, so get in touch, and if you have any suggestions (particularly for bike stuff), bang my line! I’ll see you right back here on Sunday, provided I haven’t succumbed to the novel coronavirus.
